3xa Design developed proposals for the conversion of a former field barn in the Yorkshire Dales National Park into short-let holiday accommodation. The distinctive building type is characteristic of the rural Dales landscape and we carefully considered the setting and architectural legibility of the barn to create a two-bedroomed property that works entirely within the extant building structure and its existing window and door openings.
Our overseas clients wanted a place to stay in the Dales when they were in the UK. Our options appraisal identified different spatial approaches to sociable open plan living within the constraints of the existing building form and the restrictive setting of the national park. In the chosen scheme, the living room makes maximum use of the southern and eastern aspects of the site, creating a double height sociable space connecting split level ground floor accommodation to an upper level gallery and study area lit by roof light.
The vulnerability of the property to extreme flooding events drove the design approach to the detailing of split level ground floor accommodation with a concrete bund detail used to establish a resilient datum line around the internal perimeter of the property. Planning approval for this project was obtained in May 2021.
