We developed community housing proposals for a speculative site in the South Lakeland area of Cumbria. The scheme addressed a requirement for flexible 21st century living within the particular context of an edge-of-village extension site. Our proposal creates 41 homes of various sizes that can be customised to accommodate working from home and extended family relationships.
The scheme considered thresholds between community and private space, using shared courtyards, hedged garden walks and communal green / growing spaces to organise dwellings that utilised natural surveillance and created a strong sense of place and shelter within the wider landscape. We explored local vernacular motifs, forms and details to create a contextual but contemporary language of architectural domestic space. Well planned houses that provided good quality functional spaces and made effective use of internal architectural volume, light and views were an essential component of the scheme.
